The final episodes of the Batman Unburied Unburied audio series are here. We’ve reviewed every episode from the first episode and your support has been overwhelming.
In that spirit, I’ve compiled a not-very-spoilery review of the final two episodes (9 and 10) and I hope you enjoy it. Remember to leave your thoughts in the comments section after reading.
Batman Unburied Episode 9 Review (Box in the Ground)
After Poison Ivy’s dramatic introduction in the previous episode, we get to hear her in real-time action. The episode starts with her raiding Wayne Tower for ‘The Tree of Life’.
She quickly overwhelms the three guards at the building and goes on with her business flanked by Cornelius Stirk (The Harvester) and Vicky Vale as a hostage.
At first, it doesn’t make sense why Vicky Vale was abducted but it does later on in the episode. She was meant to distract Batman from foiling Poison Ivy’s plan and it worked quite well.
With Batman being Batman (contingencies and whatnot), it turns out the tree Ivy was after wasn’t in the building as she thought. However, she knows Batman is Bruce Wayne (she was in his head alongside Hugo Strange before) and figures the tree would be at the Wayne Manor.
The Batmobile features for the first time in the series in episode 9 and the V6 engine sounds great (I may be wrong). However, something terrible happens to it as the episode ends—not gonna spoil the part for you.
Batman Unburied Episode 9 is average at best but still quite entertaining, especially with the banter between Ivy and Batman. The latter tries to play some mind games but Poison Ivy happens to be too smart for that. She wins this first round of their one-on-one encounter.
I’ve mentioned this in the previous reviews and I’ll have to stress it again—Winston Duke has an awesome Batman voice. Ignore the other critics. I’m certain it’ll get better if we ever have more episodes going forward. Give the actor a break!
Batman Unburied Episode 10 Review (In the Soil)
Episode 10 marks the final showdown between Batman and Poison Ivy at the Wayne Manor – where Batman has the tree re-planted. Cornelius Stirk (The Harvester) plays a big part in the ‘boss fight’, muddying the waters with his unpredictability or what we could call mental instability.
Barbara Gordon also plays a huge role in the final episode alongside Alfred who’s taken hostage by Poison Ivy and The Harvester.
I stand corrected on mentioning that Barbara might have been Batgirl before in my episode 3-4 review. The final episode happens to be the build-up to her becoming Batgirl in the future.
Batman manages to win with the mind games at this point by distracting Ivy with some information regarding her long-lost love interest Alex. This information turns the tide in our hero’s favor culminating in the conclusion of the main conflict of the series.
The final fight is a bit underwhelming at the start but ends in a dramatic (not too dramatic) fashion—when a few gunshots here and there end the fight. However, the writers and voice actors do a good enough job to make it engaging.
The final part of the episode is an interaction between The Riddler and Bruce Wayne which happens after the latter deciphers one last riddle.
On a scale of 1 – 10, Batman Unburied Episode 10 gets a 7.5! The acting is generally good and the story went at a steady pace resulting in a satisfying conclusion.
Wrapping it Up
Batman Unburied has finally come to its conclusion after 10 episodes and it was a wild run despite a couple of plot holes. It’s one of the shows that prove that podcasting can be an entertaining format and is here to stay.
As comic books are on their deathbed—I think creating more superhero content in audio format would be a welcome replacement for many.
