If you’re looking for a nice mid-range high-performance smartphone in 2024, you may come across the Tecno Camon 20 Pro. The device came out in 2023 as the successor of the Camon 19 Pro from the Tecno Camon 19 series.
We’ll look at what the Camon 20 Pro comes with regarding performance, camera, build quality, display, and whether you should consider it in 2024. You’ll also get links on where to buy this device. There is a 4G and 5G version of the Tecno Camon 20 Pro.
Packaging and What’s In the Box?
The Tecno Camon 20 Pro comes in the usual blue and white flat box like previous Camon devices. In the box, you’ll get a 30W fast charging power brick, a USB-C cable, a SIM ejection tool, a clear phone case, a user manual, a warranty card, and a pair of wired earphones. Tecno Camon 20 Pro Design and Build Quality
The Tecno Camon 20 Pro is slightly smaller than its predecessor and looks much better. However, being a 5G device it’s thick and feels a bit stronger than the Camon 19 which easily bends if you accidentally sit on it. But I feel the Camon 20 Pro’s structural integrity won’t fair any better under similar circumstances.
The design is an upgrade as this device is one of the best-looking midrange devices I’ve seen from 2023, especially the color options. Overall, the device looks and feels premium and the build quality is good enough—I’ll just have to give it a year or two to see how it ages.
Please note that the Tecno Camon 20 Pro isn’t waterproof, so please take care when around water bodies and containers.
Display and Camera
I love that the Tecno Camon 20 Pro comes with a 6.6-inch AMOLED display, which means gaming and watching videos should be a great experience. However, I have one small problem with this display—the AMOLED doesn’t bring up the absolute black you’d expect in some cases.
For instance, when watching YouTube videos you’ll notice that the black bars beside 16:9 videos are brownish, meaning they are emitting some light. I’d expect these to be pitch black. But I guess this might be a software issue that may have already been fixed by the time you’re reading this review.
Like most devices with AMOLED, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro supports always-on-display. This means you can see stuff like time, notifications, and fingerprint area with the screen turned off. However, this feature eats into the device’s battery so I’d recommend setting it to display when you tap the screen.
The display refresh rate goes up to 120 Hz but from my daily use, I could never tell the difference with the minimum 60 Hz. I’d recommend just leaving it as it is out of the box.
In the camera department, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro does a decent job for the everyday user. I only faced challenges when trying to take videos and pictures in low-light conditions. Outdoors, the images and videos are perfect and this device would be great for events like weddings and outdoor photo sessions.
The front camera is decent and takes some great photos by default. It has some obvious enhancements which you can turn up further but I found it just okay with the default settings. Below is a selfie I took with the default settings:
I won’t talk about the megapixel count because this metric doesn’t matter on smartphones. A high megapixel count is simply a marketing gimmick. Nevertheless, the camera quality is good enough for daily use, including the front camera which did a good job for me when making video calls and taking a few selfies.
Performance and Audio
With 8GB RAM, I didn’t expect the Tecno Camon 20 Pro to struggle with gaming or streaming videos. The device was able to handle games like PUBG Mobile, eFootball, and Call of Duty Mobile smoothly even at the highest graphics settings. The device overheated sometimes with high graphic settings but it wasn’t much of a problem most of the time.
I could easily switch between the games and other apps without any noticeable lag meaning the Mediatek Helio CPU handles business well enough. The only time the device heated up was when playing the triple-A mobile games I’ve mentioned above.
For audio, listening with the stereo speakers is great and loud enough to use outdoors. The earpiece doubles up as the second speaker and the loudspeaker at the bottom of the Camon 20 Pro handles the bass. The device has a 3.5mm jack which is becoming rarer by the day. I’m glad I still have this option because as an audiophile, I still believe wired audio is still miles ahead of Bluetooth.
Still on audio, the earpiece is solid for calls and you won’t ever have to struggle to listen to calls in noisy environments. The only gripe I have with this is that anyone in the same room as you can eavesdrop on your calls without struggle. In this case, you’ll have to lower the earpiece volume as low as you can.
Tecno Camon 20 Pro Battery Life
How long the Camon 20 Pro’s battery will last depends on how you use the device. If you’re a moderate user—occasionally scrolling through social media, taking a few photos here and there, listening to music, watching a video or two, and listening to podcasts. You can use the device from morning to evening and still have 50 percent left if it is fully charged.
However, if you game for extended periods and binge on TikTok and Instagram reels for hours, expect to charge this device at least once before the day ends. Heavy gaming will take a toll and may last you about 4 hours on a single charge.
From my everyday use, the battery is great and I’ve sometimes slept without charging the phone, woken up the next day, left the house without charging the device, and still got through to the evening.
The Tecno Camon 20 Pro comes with a 30-watt Type-C charger which should be able to charge it fully for an hour and around 20 minutes. This isn’t the fastest charging speed out there but it’s good enough for a 5000 mAh battery. Unfortunately the Camon 20 Pro doesn’t support wireless charging if that’s your thing.
Should You Buy the Tecno Camon 20 Pro?
I’d highly recommend the Tecno Camon 20 Pro in 2024 if you’re looking for a mid-range smartphone that you can use for a year or more. It’s a great improvement from its previous iteration, has decent battery life, a good camera, a great display, a headphone jack, and looks beautiful.
I’ve been using the device for several months at the time of this writing and I don’t have any glaring issues with it yet. Just don’t sit on it, the chassis isn’t that strong. The only thing I usually worry about with Tecno phones is the Android updates. The Camon 20 Pro comes with Android 13 out-of-the-box and it may take a miracle to get an upgrade to Android 14.
